For those of you who don’t know why God made a covenant of circumcision, or what circumcision is for in certain religions, I hope this post will help clear things up for you. Jesus said that God wants those who worship him to worship him in spirit and in truth. So, circumcision is a matter of the heart, ultimately.
(Genesis 17) gives us the story of God making His covenant of circumcision with Abraham, and all of Abraham’s descendants. I did a little research into circumcision, and found the following information: Circumcision as symbol of one’s covenant with God. The foreskin is also called the hood of the penis. A hood can also be called a mantle. A mantle: a figurative cloak, symbolizing preeminence (superiority) or authority. Example: accepted the mantle of leadership. That definition comes from Merriam Webster, as you’ll see by following the link.
So, this would make the circumcision of males, the removal of their mantle of preeminence and authority. Which comes from (Genesis 17:11) – You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. Because, the head of every woman is man, and the head of every man is Christ; and the head of Christ is God.. (1Cor. 11:3)In the spirit, it is the same thing as is described in (Rev. 4:10-11) (Philippians 2:9-11)
(Deut. 10:16) (Jeremiah 4:4) tells us to “Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.” That tells us that the covenant with God happens in our hearts first. The circumcision is an outward sign of it. God’s still telling us, in that scripture, to give up our authority to Him. (Romans 2:29) (Colossians 3:5) Adam and Eve gave their authority and preeminence over to Satan. But, in and through Christ Jesus, we have authority; even over spirits. (Luke 10:19-22) I do believe that, because we were created in God’s image and after His likeness, we did have preeminence over angels, even then. Satan was a fallen angel, so definitely, he shouldn’t have ranked with Adam and Eve. Adam wasn’t deceived. He could have ordered Satan out of there. (Genesis 3:1) Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He definitely could have called on the LORD to settle that one. He chose not to exercise his authority. (Psalm 8:4-9) (Hebrews 2:6-12)
The bottom line is that we need to remember the order of the chain of command in every situation. Every day is a day of circumcision, when you think about it. Every day we’re faced with the choices; blessing or cursing, life, or death. When we keep our hearts circumcised, and keep the chain of command in the right order, we will always come out ahead.
