Today’s message from God Calling – A.J. Russell, reminds us that what God calls us to is a higher calling. We are called out of the drudgery and sordidness of mere existence and survival, and to an abundantly vibrant life. We are called to a life of truth, peace, and joy. When we live truth, it brings peace and joy, and freedom to us.
The message bids us to be true to that calling, and not to allow anything to pull us off of that path and away from that calling. May I tell you that that higher calling does not just encompass ministry or serving in organized religion. That higher calling goes out to each and every one of us. That higher calling is a call to abide in God’s Word and in His presence daily, in our living. It is in our living that others are drawn to our Lord. That is our glorious work. Jesus said, “I am the truth, the life, and the way.” When’s the last time you helped someone get some clarity? You gave them truth. When is the last time you brought someone out of their shell, or included them in your gathering? You gave them life. How about that one you helped to get to that job interview? You were their way. Life, everyday, is filled with opportunities to do God’s glorious work just by caring about someone besides oneself. When that revelation clicked for me, my home life changed, my work environment changed, and i found more joy welling up within than I could ever have imagined having.
Now let me tell you how the devil works to pull you out of that, off that path, and down under him. He’ll distract you with that guy that just moved in next door, that job offer that’s too good to pass up, that well-meaning family member who’ll tell you you’re going overboard with the “Jesus thing,” and a thousand other things; anything to get you to step down to the lower level. And he will do it time and time again; every time you rise to the next level, he’ll be right there. Satan prowls like a lion seeking whom he might devour. This is especially true of people in public ministry, but the devil isn’t prejudiced; he’ll come after you and me at home in our little kitchens or in the yard…you know. That’s where he got Eve-right in the back yard. I’ve known of women, and men, who were powerful ministers and some very much int he public eye. They got married and their ministries were destroyed. That’s why we have to be so careful about the ties we make.
How do we stay true to that higher calling? Keep your eyes focused on the Lord. He leads us into green pastures, beside still waters. ( Psalm 23) He is able to make us stand. (Romans 14:4) When I think of that, what comes to mind is being afraid to speak, to stand, to offer an opinion or suggestion. If is causes you fear, maybe you’re in the wrong place, with the wrong person, doing the wrong thing. You’ll often hear someone say, “To thine own self be true.” You are created in His image and after His likeness-be true to your higher self; that is your higher calling. That’s what Satan robbed Eve and Adam – and you and me of in the garden of Eden.
