Today’s message from God Calling -A.J. Russell, bids us to seek first His kingdom. The message speaks to us about developing and building our inner life, our inmost selves-the spirit, and then, as we do that, our outer circles develop and grow. We get it backwards. “I’ll join this church, go into ministry, become one of the ___(fill in the blank), and my life will be wonderful.” Am I right? Yeah, you know what? My life was not wonderful. I was not one tiny bit more the happy camper. And, I was completely disillusioned, disappointed, distraught, and discombobulated. Spiritually, I was almost destroyed. Notice that word “destroyed.” The Bible tells us the thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy, doesn’t it.
Imagine my surprise when the Lord reminded me that He said, “the kingdom of heaven is upon you/within you.” What?! Why are you looking for me in church, Maam? Why are you looking for me in the Bible study? Why aren’t you looking for me where I said you’d find me? All of me, all of my ways, all of my words, all of my promises, and all of my love-they’re within you. You are seeking religion. You won’t find me in religion. You will find me in relationship. I didn’t create you to worship me. I created you to love me. Do you know that when you love someone, worship, praise, and adoration rise up within you and overflow from there to that loved one? Jesus said, “You search the scriptures, thinking in them you’ll find eternal life. but you refuse to come to me, and I am the life.” That means you have to read your Bible, pray, praise and worship, and meditate on the things of God-alone; just you and God-sometimes.
Jesus often sought time alone with the Father; the Bible tells us that. He knew the source of His strength, courage, wisdom, life-the life force that does make a difference. Quoting directly from the message: “When it has gained strength and learned its lesson in the inner circle, it can then widen its life, working this time from within out, taking then to each contact, each friendship, the inner circle influence.” The paragraph this is taken from speaks of God having to cut away ties-people and things, even places sometimes, that bind us to the outer and wider circles, in order to perfect His work (love) in us. Notice that says, “IN us.” Love, is after all, what it is all about. Nothing on the outside can make you wonderful on the inside. -Okay, maybe some things can temporarily; but those outside things can change in a heartbeat, and they can kill just as easily and as quickly. If you want lasting strength, peace, love, joy, and personal power, you have to develop and enlarge it from within. “The good man out of the good stored up in his heart, brings forth good.” Then, all the other things are added to us-and most come naturally as we grow in spirit.
